This painting shows Jesse’s first-born, named Eliab (Hebrew for God is Father/God is my Father).  In 1 Samuel 16 the prophet Samuel naturally thought that he would anoint Eliab, because he was first born and because of his stature as Israel's next king after God had rejected king Saul, but 1 Samuel 16:7 states that God sees what is within.  God saw that Eliab was not fit to be king, and the painting shows Eliab grasping for the treasure that the serpent above him has set in front of his eyes, which he can never grasp.  We later read of Eliab’s anger and contempt, character traits not suited to high office.
